What’s the Future of Appalachian Petrochemical Development?

From the Concerned Ohio River Residents, February 1, 2021

The threat of an Appalachian petrochemical buildout has loomed over our communities for more than a decade. Policymakers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia continue to double down on natural gas as a pathway to job growth and prosperity, even as COVID-related slowdowns hinder an Appalachian petrochemical dream already suffering from inhospitable global markets and policy responses to climate change. As we transition into 2021, the Shale Crescent vision is, at best, far behind the schedule imagined in economic impact study and, at worst, in danger of not happening at all.

Is there a chance an Appalachian petrochemical buildout could still come to fruition? If not, what kind of economy can we construct in its stead?

On Wednesday, February 3rd at 10:30 A.M., experts from both sides of the issue will debate the economic future of Appalachia as part of “Critical Condition: ‘The Shale Crescent’ and the Dream of an Appalachian Petrochemical Boom,” the Ohio River Valley Institute’s inaugural forum and Q&A on regional petrochemical development.
