STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) – One Shenandoah Valley woman is setting off on a more than 600-mile trek on horseback to speak out on behalf of the environment. She plans to ride from Staunton to West Virginia and then down to North Carolina along the route for the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline.

Sarah Murphy and her horse Rob Roy took off on Wednesday, September 26, and they’ll spend more than a month on their journey to show her opposition to the pipeline.

“When you love nature and you love the world around you, you know, everyone has their gifts and what they’re good at, and I think it’s important to use those to better the world,” Murphy said. “This is my way of being able to do that.”

They will spend more than 30 days going from Staunton to Wetzel County, West Virginia, to Robeson County, North Carolina, and then back home to the Shenandoah Valley to call attention to the anti-pipeline cause.

“The repercussions are longer-lasting than a month, and this is kind of our chance to tell them how we feel about it,” Murphy said. “And once it’s done, it’s done, and we can’t bring it back.”

Even as Dominion Energy begins work on the natural gas pipeline, Murphy is not ready to give up the fight.

“People are fighting really hard,” Murphy said. “We don’t have all the resources that a large corporation does, but I’ve been calling it death by a thousand cuts. You know, each little bit of legislation or, you know, every time people go out and look at it and record violations that they’re seeing – I mean, that’s one little notch coming out of it at a time.”

Murphy believes her ride will inspire others to get involved in the fight and, ultimately, she hopes Dominion will change its mind.

“I’ve been hearing that Dominion is investing in solar and alternative energies,” Murphy said. “And if they are already doing that and they already understand that that’s kind of the way that it’s going in the future, why do this? You know, 600 miles is a lot of mountains to corrupt.”

This lady and her followers are really ignorant and stupid. Dominion has the pipelines underground, there is no mountain destruction in any pictures I’ve seen. Dominion is already trying to stay “green” and help the environment with “natural gas”.
For her to be on horseback this long is apparent she has NO job. So the Government is taking care of her??? We, the working people are taking care of HER with welfare??? She’s stupid. She already got fines and a no trespassing ticket. There are 100′s of hard working people who enjoy their paychecks on Friday from hard work invested into the USA. They are waiting for the pipeline to be approved for their work. Look what she and her followers are holding up. A bunch of hard working Americans. Talk about a CRIME? This is a CRIME going on.
