Job Opening — Charlotte Field Organizer:  Greenpeace USA

Job ID: 2017-1145, Job Locations: US-NC-Charlotte, Posted Date: 6/14/2017, Category: Grassroots

Overview:

Greenpeace’s field team builds power for the climate and climate justice movements by organizing in regions, supporting movement partners, and facilitating the role of the broader organization in regional and local work. We center equity in our work by grounding our campaigns in justice and following the leadership of frontline communities. We aim to build power together with movement partners and activists, recruit new supporters, and contribute to winning tangible change for people and the planet.

For the past several years, Greenpeace has been organizing in North Carolina to shut down dirty coal plants, clean up coal ash, and demand that the state utility, Duke Energy, provide clean and affordable electricity to ratepayers. Instead, Duke Energy is doubling-down on fossil fuel infrastructure with plans to build several natural gas power plants as well as the Atlantic Coast pipeline, which will carry fracked gas from West Virginia, thru Virginia and across eight North Carolina counties into South Carolina.

This organizing position will support communities along the proposed route of the pipeline in the eastern part of the state while also organizing in Charlotte, where Duke Energy is headquartered. This will include participating in the Summer of Resistance, a new project that Greenpeace is organizing to train thousands of people in the skills of non-violent direct action (NVDA) and support acts of creative resistance across the country to fight Trump’s harmful agenda.

Responsibilities:

A Greenpeace field organizer is passionate, driven, strategic, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. Organizers use a wide variety of strategies and tactics on campaigns to protect people and the planet from corporate greed. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing simple, effective campaign plans with motivating tactics for volunteers.
  • Coordinating and recruiting for outreach events that grow our base of volunteers and public support for our campaigns.
  • Building, coaching, and retaining a team of volunteer leaders with regular meetings.
  • Quickly developing knowledge of Greenpeace issues, planning and executing successful campaign events, and generating media coverage for our campaigns.
  • Coordinating closely with other Greenpeace staff and members of the campaign team, actions team, media team, online team and grassroots team.
  • Building and cultivating relationships with organizations and grass-tops leaders including representing Greenpeace in state coalitions.
  • Producing ongoing reports, data tracking, and critical analysis of work.
  • Working weekend and evening events as needed, ability to have a flexible schedule and work long hours when necessary. At Greenpeace we work with each organizer to create a healthy work/life balance, but this is not a 9-5 job.
  • Other responsibilities as required by the Deputy Grassroots Director and Organizing Manager.
