Marion County Spill Not Cleaned up as Promised

Locals say the spill on Bunners Ridge last week is still a mess, despite officials reporting on Thursday that clean-up was 95% complete. Residents are concerned about the integrity of their well water, or that they will no longer be able to swim in White Day Creek after 50 gallons of synthetic oil spilled into it. Both Chesapeake and DEP have taken water samples, but results are still pending.

Tanker Truck Spill in Marion County

Early Wednesday morning a third party tanker truck hit a tree while on its way to a Chesapeake site on Bunner Ridge. The collision knocked open a valve, causing 9 barrels of synthetic based oil to spill one and a half miles down the road, and into a stream that leads into White Day Creek. The oil is used in the drilling process. Chesapeake officials warned local residents not to allow their animals to drink from the stream. WVDEP officials were on the scene to clean up, and by this afternoon it was reported that 95% of the spill had been cleaned up.

Brine Water & Oil Residue Spilled into Doddridge County Stream

The Department of Environmental Protection is monitoring cleanup efforts after a spill at a Doddridge County well-site. Hall Drilling has leaked close to 30 barrels of brine water containing oil residue. The leak happened on England’s run, with the brine and residue flowing into a nearby creek.

The liquid was not frack fluid from a horizontal Marcellus well, State
Division of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Kathy Cosco said.

The spill was reported on the DEP tip line Sunday evening, she said. “It’s salty brine water with some oil residue that got into the stream,” Cosco said. “The produced water came from a shallow formation well.”

A DEP inspector was on site to monitor the clean up and no notices of violation have been issued at this point, Cosco said.
