WV Rivers’ Special Report and Looking Ahead to 2020

Dear Friend of WV Rivers,

I am Angie Rosser, the executive director of West Virginia Rivers Coalition and today I want to share with you a special year-end report on WV Rivers’ programming and achievements towards cleaner water and healthier streams in West Virginia.

For 30 years, WV Rivers has been the voice of West Virginia’s rivers and streams; and this year, WV Rivers experienced more public engagement in our programming than ever before. So far, we facilitated 46,582 citizen actions on policies that affect our water.

Were you one of the citizen advocates that stood up for clean water through WV Rivers’ action alerts?

Next year, West Virginia’s water will be facing some big challenges, and we’ll need everyone to step-up and do their part to make our water safe and our streams wild and healthy.

WV Rivers depends on donations from supporters like you to move our mission forward. You can join the movement for clean, safe West Virginia water by making a year-end, tax-deductible donation.

Learn how WV Rivers will put your donation work to expand our clean water programming in 2020 here.

Thank you very much for your help at this time.

Hold Rover Pipeline Accountable for Water Pollution – Act by 7/13/18

Update from West Virginia Rivers Coalition, July 12, 2018

RE: Doddridge, Tyler and Wetzel Counties including Under the Ohio River

The Rover Pipeline in northern West Virginia has a long history of negligence – 18 water quality violations and two cease and desist orders since April 2017. You may have read in the news that WVDEP has issued Rover a penalty of $430,000 for 14 of those violations. The proposed agreement to that penalty is now open for public comment.

While WV Rivers commends WVDEP for holding Rover accountable for their water quality violations, we request the penalty be adjusted in a way that fully considers Rover’s repeated negligence and disrespect of environmental law, and strongly deters other pipeline companies from following suit. View our letter to WVDEP here.

Over the last year, Rover’s erosion impacted 35 streams and created unlawful water quality conditions approximately 92 times. $430,000 doesn’t cover the costs to reclaim the damage they’ve inflicted on West Virginia’s streams and the local residents who depend on them. Nor does it match in scale a penalty for a project with a construction budget of $4.2 billion. That’s why we are requesting WVDEP reconsider Rover’s penalties and deny them any future projects.

Add your voice! Share with WVDEP that you want them to hold Rover Pipeline accountable for their water pollution. Send a letter before 5PM, Friday, July 13.

Accidents Continue in Central West Virginia

From Reports of the Doddridge County Watershed Association

On WV Route 18 not far from West Union in Doddridge County, the recent truck accident was cleaned up and cleared. A tanker truck ran off the road and turned on its side, as shown in the picture at left. This location is near the Irwin Pad.

Also, at the Hill Pad on Indian Run Road near Salem in Harrison County, the drilling mud stored in frack tanks was discharged from a circulation hose when the circulation pump was turned on. In this case some 2100 gallons of low toxic drilling mud was discharged.

Information on the extent of contamination of the local soils and water streams by these recent accidents is not available at this time.

The Doddridge County Watershed Association continues to express concern for releases of contamination with potential to contaminate the local streams including Middle Island Creek, the source of water for West Union, the county seat of Doddridge County, WV.
