The U.S. invasion of Iraq, which saw no repercussions for the Bush administration despite breaching international humanitarian law, coupled with Cold War-era policies and NATO’s eastward expansion, incited Putin’s aggressions towards Ukraine, says retired colonel Andrew Bacevich, president and co-founder of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.

“American decision makers acted impetuously, and indeed recklessly, and now we’re facing the consequences,” says Bacevich.

He is Professor Emeritus of International Relations and History at the Boston University Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in American Diplomatic History from Princeton University and taught at West Point and Johns Hopkins University before joining the faculty at Boston University. Bacevich is also a retired career officer in the Armor Branch of the U.S. Army. He is author of The Limits of Power, Washington Rules, and The Age of Illusions: How America Squandered Its Cold War Victory.
