		<description>&lt;strong&gt;Mary Anne Hitt, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, August 11, 2022&lt;/strong&gt;

I’m quoted in USA Today on the Senate passage of the Inflation Reduction Act:

“It’s a pivotal moment, added Mary Anne Hitt, a longtime climate activist who spent decades fighting to close coal-fired power plants and whose thoughts turned to her daughter.

“‘I just want to run and tell her that we’re one step closer to doing what we need to do to ensure she has a safe future,’ said Hitt, now senior director at Climate Imperative.”

This was my first reaction when the Senate passed the biggest climate legislation in US history. Watching the moment the vote was cast on C-SPAN with Hazel brought me to tears.

It’s a game changer that will get us a long way toward our climate goals, make clean energy solutions more affordable for all and create millions of good jobs (including here in West Virginia), and signal to the word world we’re serious about the climate crisis and will do our part.

It also falls short and includes compromises made at Senator Manchin’s behest that puts our most vulnerable communities and neighbors in harms way of new fossil fuel projects, including a side deal on permitting reform that will attempt to fast track the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Advocates will fight those projects, while also working to deliver on the new opportunities the bill creates.

The House is scheduled to vote on the bill on Friday. One step closer. Many more to go.
