		<description>I have been reading over David Hughes&#039; paper analyzing the apparent optimism bias in EIA estimates of gas capacity, in order to counter editorials claiming among other things that this is a practically unlimited resource. In it I came upon this horrifying information:

A review of well costs and trends for the Marcellus reveals that, compared to 2006, well lateral length has increased to 7,000 feet from 5,000 feet, fluid used has increased many-fold to 8.7 million gallons per well, and proppant used has increased 10-fold to nearly 10 million pounds per well.

Ten million pounds of that sand for every well!! And over 8 million gallons of ruined water!
