The fact is that U. S. industry runs with a pathetic ignorance of even basic chemistry, let alone toxicology. Typically, the laborer, the job boss, the big boss back at the office, the guy who sold it to the big boss, the salesman's boss, all the way back to the company that made the chemical know one thing - that it works for the purpose it was sold for. Few had even high school chemistry.

Did anybody drink this compound at any level of dilution - of course not, it would be crazy. Did they spill it on their skin - not intentionally, you can be sure, it was washed off soon if it was, and no record was made. Inhale it? No. In most cases these chemicals have had no toxicological testing at all. Something as subtle as endocrine interruption is almost never tested for.

Yet chemicals are sold with the exuberance of dishwashing soap sales and used by the truckload. The only criterion of production is can it be sold, not even how well does it does it do the job, certainly not what might happen if something goes wrong.

I'm a chemist, spent my life teaching it. Chemicals can do wonderful things. But, like explosives, you should know what you are doing.

Study looks at drilling, hormone-disrupting chemicals

There’s a new study out that might be of interest to West Virginians who follow the debate over the boom in natural gas drilling in our state’s Marcellus Shale region. There is a press release from The Endocrine Society.
