Video: Water Crisis Public Hearing from House of Delegates

By Scott Finn, WV Public Broadcasting, February 3, 2014

Watch the public forum video at the WV House of Delegates held Monday evening about the Elk River chemical spill.

On this special extended edition of The Legislature Today, citizens tell lawmakers how they’ve been affected by the chemical contamination of their drinking water.

The hearing focused on Senate Bill 373, which is designed to regulate and inspect above ground storage facilities like the one involved in the Freedom Industries spill. The bill recently passed the state Senate and is now under consideration in the House.

NOTE: This year, at least 33 states are likely to consider bills related to chemicals in consumer products, predicts Safer States, a coalition of state-based environmental health organizations. Eleven or more will attempt to require identification and disclosure of chemicals and many will attempt to limit the use of certain chemicals, the group said. The American Cleaning Institute is prepared for a lot of state-level activity and is “gearing up for a very busy year.”
