Morgantown City Council to Consider Proposals to Restrict Fracking

by Dee Fulton on May 31, 2011

The Dominion Post, May 30, reported that on the evening of Tuesday May 31, the Morgantown City Council will consider two proposed resolutions which have spawned from concerns about protecting the city’s water supply after the WVDEP issued permits to drill gas wells very close to the city’s water intake on the Mon River. One resolution asks the WV Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) to issue a stop work order for all drilling within 1 mile of the city’s drinking water supply until the water and public health, safety and welfare can be protected.  The second proposal, developed by Deputy Mayor Don Spencer, calls for the state to grant incorporated municipalities the authority to develop geographic limits on drilling.  The proposal also recommends that the state of WV create legislation to protect the citizens from the impacts of drilling and that the WVDEP increase its staff to keep pace with the escalation in industrial activity and the need for oversight.
